What we do

Direct action

Since 2021, B.A.D has been organizing DIRECT ACTION across the greater capital region, and the United States as a whole. Direct action can look like many things, and our goal is always to show up in our communities in the way that serves our communities best. Direct Action against oppressive forces has been a cornerstone of the fight for Black, Brown, Indigenous, Queer and Marginalized liberation for centuries. In each step of the process, we honor those who came before us and the work they did - while challenging ourselves to be creative, innovative and present against the fight ahead of us now.

Some of the ways we organize include:

  • Protests

  • Court Support

  • Community Speak Outs

  • Community Events (Cookouts, education circles, public screenings etc.)

  • Mutual Aid

  • Occupies (Ex. Arch Street Occupy 2021)

  • Fundraising

  • Local and State government etc. (CPRB meetings, Local Gov. events, etc.)

It is always our goal to not only RESPOND to things that happen in our communities, but to organize PREEMPTIVELY and PROACTIVELY around the dynamic and diverse challenges and issues our communities face. It is our belief that it is not enough to simply respond, but to work to push back against the systemic and oppressive forces at play from many angles at constant. We do our best to be involved in many areas of collective liberation across the greater Capital Region and the United States - as well as issues abroad that marginalized people are facing every day.

We will continue to push back against oppressive regimes, white supremacy and systemic violence in our Direct Actions and continue to work with our communities to visualize a new world.

In mid 2020, Miki and Kasey founded CommunityAid518, a mutual aid system to support local families and community members. Despite the challenges around organizing funds, services and assistance in the face of a global pandemic, we were able to support and uplift more than 40 community members in the short 7 months of operation. This experience helped to inform not only our decision to create B.A.D, but also informed us on HOW we would build the foundation for our organization from the ground up, working with Shaqueena and Gherian to expand and create something amazing, while honoring a mutual aid model and lifestyle.

Since 2021, one of our most important tenets of operation has been Mutual Aid. In everything we do, our goal is to honor the humanity of everyone we encounter. Mutual Aid can look like raising funds, providing services, or donating resources and time. It can also look like showing up for events, supporting initiatives, providing information, skill sharing, and working together to make something amazing happen. We operate on a Mutual Aid basis across the board, ensuring that all of our work is done through an equitable and sustainable route, aiming to provide the most support and mitigate the most harm in our communities.

We organize Mutual Aid in a way that honors “Progressive Stack” - meaning the most marginalized community members are served first in most cases, in order to flip the paradigm of power that exists in the United States. This doesn’t mean we don’t support everyone, it just means we work to ensure that EVERYONE is uplifted in an intentional way, decentering white supremacy and societal “rules” about who is worthy of care, support and love and who isn’t.

Lastly, we always operate with full transparency practices when it comes to how we organize funds, distribute funds, and other services/resources. We NEVER keep funds that are organized for a community member, and always keep in communication with the community members we’re organizing for and with. The ONLY money transfer services we use as of August 2024 are CASHAPP, VENMO and PAYPAL. The same practices extend to all aspects of our organizing. We also want to acknowledge that we do our very best to ensure each need brought to us is met in a timely manner, but we cannot promise we’ll reach a goal. Mutual Aid differs from standard fundraising practices in that it relies solely on community support and is encouraged to be a lifestyle, which can be transitioned into a sustainable community system that meets everyone's needs - rather than a one off donation or service. Mutual Aid is about everyone having what they need, equity, and liberation. Our goal is to continue to organize sustainable systems of mutual aid through our work and in collaboration with others.
